8 Simple Steps to a Sustainable Beauty Routine

Beauty products make us look our best but can turn the planet ugly. That is why it is important to use products that are sustainable made and can be easily re-used or recycled.

  1. Limit the amount of products you use
    • If you choose to use less items you waste less resources.
  2. Limit the amount of each product you use
    • Chances are you use more soap or product than you need which gets washed down the drain adding more chemicals to the wastewater system.
  3. Turn off the faucet when washing (brushing teeth, cleaning hair, ect)
    • You can save up to 200 gallons of water a month by turning the water off when brushing your teeth. Turing off the water when washing your hair can save an additional 150 gallons of water a month.
  4. Use sustainable tools
    • Avoid one use tools (floss brushes) and tools made of plastic (toothbrush).
  5. Buy items with minimal packaging
    • Bar soap generally has more sustainable packaging and uses less fuel in transit because of lower weight than bottled products
  6. Avoid toxins look for all-natural or all-organic products
    • Natural products are better for your personal health and helps you avoid irritation. As well as keeps chemicals out of wastewater and are safer for people working in the manufacturing of the product.
  7. Make your own products with kitchen ingredients
    • Many beauty products can be made at home for a fraction of the cost at a retail store. Some easy products to try and make include toothpaste, deodorant, moisturizers, and face masks.
  8. Look for products not tested on animals
    • Weather your an animal lover or not, there is no reason for a rabbit to wear lipstick. Today there are many more reliable testing options and if mass market options like L'Oreal have switched there is no reason animal testing can't be avoided.
